Storage Tips

01   Start Clean & Dry

Clean belongings before storing them and make sure everything is completely dry before it is packed or placed in your storage unit.

02   Label Every Box

Label boxes on the top and at least one side. Include the room and a short description of the contents so items are easy to locate later.

03   Leave a Clear Path

Leave a walkway through your storage unit and keep belongings you expect to use most often near the entrance.

Furniture & Mattresses

• Disassemble bed frames, tables and other furniture when practical. Keep screws and hardware in labeled bags with the matching furniture.
• Protect upholstered furniture with breathable furniture covers.
• Make sure furniture is completely dry before covering or storing it.
• Store mattresses according to the manufacturer's recommendations and avoid placing heavy boxes on top of them.

Appliances

• Empty, clean and completely dry refrigerators, freezers and cooking appliances before moving them into storage.
• Drain washing machines and hoses according to the manufacturer's instructions.
• Secure electrical cords and removable components before moving.
• Follow manufacturer recommendations for transportation and long-term storage.

Dishes, Glassware & Fragile Items

• Use sturdy boxes with cushioning underneath and around fragile items.
• Wrap individual pieces separately.
• Pack plates vertically with padding between them.
• Fill empty spaces so items cannot shift and clearly mark boxes containing fragile belongings.

Clothing, Bedding & Linens

• Wash and thoroughly dry fabrics before placing them in storage.
• Use wardrobe boxes for hanging clothing when appropriate.
• Store folded clothing and linens in clean, sturdy containers.
• Avoid prolonged compression of delicate fabrics, down bedding or structured garments.

Books, Documents & Photographs

• Pack books in smaller boxes so they remain manageable to lift.
• Keep books flat and avoid bending covers or spines.
• Use appropriate archival or photo-safe materials for important documents and photographs.
• Keep important boxes elevated on stable shelving or supports when practical.

Electronics & Vinyl Records

• Photograph cable connections and label cords before disconnecting electronics.
• Use original packaging when available.
• Protect electronics from impact and dust during transportation and storage.
• Store vinyl records vertically in their sleeves without excessive pressure or leaning.

Mirrors, Framed Art & Lamps

• Protect corners and edges with suitable padding.
• Store mirrors and framed artwork upright and secure them against tipping.
• Separate lamp shades from bases and cushion each piece.
• Avoid stacking boxes or other objects on lamp shades.

Bicycles, Tools & Metal Items

• Clean dirt and debris from bicycles, tools and metal equipment before storing them.
• Make sure metal surfaces are dry.
• Cover sharp edges and secure long-handled tools so they cannot fall.
• Ask our office before storing powered equipment, batteries or anything that may contain fuel.

Choose the Right Boxes & Supplies

Use smaller boxes for heavy belongings and larger boxes for lightweight items. Keep boxes square, close them securely and
